- The presence of alkyl glucosides in various popular leave-on cosmetic products, including sunscreens and facial moisturizers, was evaluated in this study. Alkyl glucosides were recently named the 2017 "Allergen of the Year" by the American Contact Dermatitis Society, in part due to the increasing prevalence of positive patch-test reactions. Of the 20 best-selling sunscreens listed on Amazon, 15% contained alkyl glucosides in their ingredient list. Similarly, of the 20 best-selling facial moisturizers, 10% contain alkyl glucosides in their ingredient list. Because patients commonly exhibit cross-reactions to various glucosides, the North American Contact Dermatitis Group recommends testing multiple types of glucosides in a patch-test series.
- Alkyl glucosides are important contact allergens and are present in top-selling sunscreens and facial moisturizers that patients may be using on a daily basis.
